To write English correctly you need vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and good spelling.
  1. Always use a dictionary or even MS Word spell checker.
  2. Keeping a notebook of the words that you find difficult to spell is recommended.
  3. Learn the spelling rules, but always be aware of the exceptions
    • Always put I before E except after C For example piece, relief, thief and then conceive, receive, receipt. 
    • Remember that when A or I is the the sound, always put E before the I, for example: eight, neighbor, reign, vein wight, and then either, height, neither etc
    • The exceptions are seize, weird, conscientious, conscience, efficient etc
  4. Be wary of silent letters. Silent Letters is a letter that must be written but when the word is pronounced it is is not included, For example: bread, bomb, comb, lamb, column, hymn, psalm, psychology, island listen, biscuit, wrong, wrist etc
  5.  Be wary of silent e. 
    • To add a suffix to a word ending with silent e, if the suffix begins with a consonant, you don't need to change the stem of the word For example: forceful, management, sincerely
    •  If the suffix you want to add begins with a vowel or a y, drop the e before adding the suffix, For example: fame + ous is famous, nerve + ous is nervous, believable +y = believably, criticise + ism is criticism
    • The exceptions are mileage, agreeable etc.
  6. Always understand that adding  prefix to a word does not usually change the spelling of the stem of the word, for example anti + septic is antiseptic, auto + biography is autobiography, de + sensitize is desensitize, dis + approve is disapprove, im + possible is impossible, inter + mediate is intermediate, mis +take is mistake, un + available is unavailable, re + used is reused, micro+chip is microchip etc.
  7. Always understand that adding a suffix to a word often changes the spelling of the stem of the word
    • When the word ends with a consonant, just end add the ending without any changes, for example treat + ment is treatment
    • When a word  has a short vowel sound ( like er, ed or ing)ending with a single consonant, double the consonant when adding a suffix that starts with a vowel, For example: mop + ing is mopping, big + est is biggest, hot + er is hotter
    • Exceptions are  words ending in r, x, w or y. These you don't double, for example: tear + ing is tearing, blow + ing is blowing, box + er is boxer, know + ing is knowing
    • If the main word has two consonants at the end, or more than one vowel, do not double the consonant, for example: rain + ing is raining, keep + er is keeper, break + ing is breaking, hang + er is hanger
  8. The rules word endings in ce and ge are as follows:
    • When you add a suffix starting with or o leave the e in . For example: manage + able is manageable, notice + able is noticeable, courage + ous is courageous
    • Exceptions are prestige + ous is prestigious
    • When you add ing to verbs ending in ie, drop the e and change the i to a y, for example: die + ing is dying, lie + ing is lying, tie + ing is tying.
